Towards Equal Representation between Genders in Turkey: Study Visit for Women Politicians, 19-23 September, Stockholm

The Study Visit for Women Politicians, which took place between 19-23 September in Stockholm, was an important milestone in KA.DER’s efforts around the recent 2011 general elections. Organized with the support of Swedish Consulate General, facilitation of Fojo Media Institute and journalist Ami Lönnroth, the seminar aimed to examine Sweden’s policies and structures related to gender equality, while also giving participants a comparative perspective between the two countries. Participants from Turkey included newly elected women MPs from all four political parties that are currently represented in the Turkish Parliament: Mihrimah Belma Satır of AKP, Zuhal Topçu of MHP, Binnaz Toprak of CHP and Sebahat Tuncel of BDP. Turkish group seeks to get more women running in future elections

Thursday, April 21, 2011 / ISTANBUL - Hürriyet Daily News - Despite failing to reach its target of 275 female candidates for Parliament in the general elections, a women’s political group has vowed to keep fighting and seek more female representation in future polls. “Since women are not appointed to the presidencies of chambers, governorships and district governorships, they cannot enter politics afterward.
